There’s always been a bit of a question mark over David Walliam’s sexuality, but I don’t think anyone was ever confused about his gender. Well, it turns out he is, because the Little Britain legend has just claimed that he’s ‘probably non-binary’.
Walliams appeared on the Australian podcast Uncomfortable Conversations with Josh Szeps, where he explained that if people were as open-minded as they are now when he was younger, he would have most likely identified as non-binary.
He said on the podcast:
‘I think in a way I’d probably say I am non-binary I think. I don’t know exactly.’
‘It’s interesting because I had this girlfriend at the end of university and we used to go out.
‘I used to go out to gay clubs and dance for like six hours and I’d be wearing a skirt and stuff like that.
‘I think it’s interesting. I mean, I find change interesting. And I mean, you know, I wrote a book called The Boy in the Dress 15 years ago, which was sort of seen as a bit more daring then.
‘And it’s always something – I’ve always sort of felt like celebrating difference on, so I’ve always thought it’s exciting.’

He added:
‘I sort of think, where would I be positioning myself maybe, if I was now 19 or 20?
‘Because I went to Bristol University and did a drama degree. And I think that course is where you’re probably… if there’s a group of people who are going to be most interested in that sort of area, most drawn to that area, it’s probably going to be drama students.’
Later in the podcast, host Josh Szeps asked: ‘And what about your sexuality? You always lean into “Britain’s most famous bi-curious comedian” or something, was that a real reflection of your adolescence, did you fool around with guys?’
Walliams responded:
‘Yeah, I’d say so. Yeah, so I was always at home with that as well. Sometimes I think my life would be a lot easier if I was just gay. Because I’m really drawn to gay things. I really like gay culture.’
Well, OK then. I always thought that Walliams played up the camp routine for the cameras, but turns out he actually wishes he was gay because that would make life a lot easier for him. Although a celebrity coming out as gay in 2024 is fairly vanilla compared to coming out as non-binary. So I guess it makes sense that he’s leaning more towards the latter.
As he suggests though, 53 years old is probably a bit late in the game to get involved with all that. If David Walliams was an unknown 19 or 20-year-old, he could say he was non-binary and no one would bat an eyelid. As a wealthy and famous middle-aged man, coming out as non-binary would probably cause the country’s collective eyeballs to roll out of their skulls. Fair play to David Walliams for the self-awareness, on that front at least.
