Notion

Notion is the alias of Bristol producer and DJ Rob Penny, who's built his name around UK garage, bassline and house, with regular excursions into jungle, drum & bass and grime. His varied club tracks under the name Notion span U.K. garage, U.K. funky, bassline, drum'n'bass, and more. He made his commercial debut in 2012 with Digits, an EP issued on Champion's Formula label, and has steadily built a catalogue since, including a stretch of releases through labels such as White Peach, 877, Four40 and Crucast, alongside his own imprint, N Music.

His biggest moment on record so far has been 2022's Outsider album, led by the Carrie Baxter-fronted "Found Love," alongside a viral remix of Chrystal's "The Days". The follow-up mixtape Forwards was highlighted by collaborations with vocalists Charlotte Plank ("Temporary Friends"), Cameron Hayes ("Secrets"), and Olivia Rose ("Backbone"). He also runs the Dance Dubs project, a home for live edits and bootlegs that otherwise wouldn't have seen the light of day, which has toured across the UK and Australia/New Zealand. He's held a regular show on Rinse FM, bringing underground club sounds from garage to jungle, with roots in underground UK bass and club music.

On the road he's become a fixture of the UK club circuit, with London, Manchester, Bristol, Leeds and Brighton among the cities he plays most, and bookings that have taken in Fabriclive, FOLD London and festival stages alongside club nights up and down the country. Expect a set that moves fluidly between bouncing bassline, crisp garage rhythms and heavier bass weight, built for a packed dancefloor rather than a slow build, with plenty of his own productions and dubs thrown into the mix alongside newer names in the scene.
