The story of Tank

Tank was an underground nightclub in Sheffield city centre, found beneath Arundel Gate between the Odeon Luxe cinema and Sheffield Hallam University. It was built around house, tech and bass music, and became known locally as one of the city's main venues for electronic music alongside student-oriented club nights.

The club opened in 2014 on the site of the former Embrace club. It was owned by Steve Baxendale, previously of Sheffield's Niche club, with day-to-day running handled by resident DJ Jamie Duggan. From the outset the venue was fitted with a Funktion-One PA system and an interior inspired by a New York subway station, complete with subway signage and neon lighting, which gave it a distinctive industrial look that it kept throughout its run. In 2022 Tank briefly closed before reopening within weeks after an outpouring of support from clubbers and DJs, and the space was later gutted and rebuilt with an upgraded sound system and a new 360-degree DJ booth.

Over its twelve years Tank ran a regular weekly programme, including its long-running Danza (house and tech) and Creation (bass and drum & bass) nights, both of which ran from 11pm until 6am, as well as its annual Bassfest event. The venue hosted a wide range of touring artists over the years, including Sammy Virji, Chase & Status, Flava D, Gorgon City, Shy FX, Solardo and Eli Brown, alongside a steady rotation of resident and local DJs.

With a capacity of around 400, Tank was one of the larger clubs in Sheffield city centre and built a loyal following, particularly among students and fans of bassline, house and techno. It was recognised locally, including winning a Sheffield "Best Nightclub" award, and was seen as a successor of sorts to the city's earlier Niche club in the local electronic music scene.

In August 2026 Tank's operators announced a sudden permanent closure, citing ever-growing running costs and obstacles facing grassroots venues. A farewell party was held on 8 August 2026, bringing to an end twelve years of weekly house, tech and bass events at the Arundel Gate site.
