Wire
The story of Wire
Wire was a basement nightclub on Call Lane in Leeds city centre, known for its intimate scale and focus on underground electronic music. The venue held around 300 people and ran on a Funktion One sound system, with an unassuming entrance that led down into a stripped-back room built for serious listening rather than spectacle.
The club opened in July 2005, taking over the space previously occupied by Think Tank. Over the following years it built a reputation as one of the north of England's dependable homes for house, techno, drum 'n' bass and leftfield electronic sounds, carving out a niche distinct from Leeds' larger commercial clubs.
Wire became closely associated with a run of long-standing residencies and promoter nights, including Pearson Sound's vinyl-only Acetate series, Butter Side Up, Overflow, Sub Dub and the dubstep-focused Deep Medi and Ruffage parties. DJs who played the club across its lifetime included Andrew Weatherall, Helena Hauff, Theo Parrish, Tama Sumo, Craig Richards, DJ Stingray 313, Jayda G, SHERELLE, Objekt and Coki, reflecting a booking policy that leaned towards selector-driven, dancefloor-serious programming rather than big-room commercial sets.
Within Leeds' club map, Wire occupied a particular place as a smaller, specialist room on Call Lane, a street that became a hub for the city's bar and club scene. It offered a counterpoint to the city's bigger venues, valued by regulars for its sound system and for the way touring DJs and local promoters used the space to build their own nights over many years.
The club closed permanently in June 2023 after more than 18 years, with management citing the cost-of-living crisis, changing lifestyle habits and the wider pressures facing UK nightlife following the pandemic. In its closing statement the team said their aim had been to build an underground electronic venue for house, techno and drum 'n' bass that Leeds could be proud of.
