Fat Freddy’s Drop
Fat Freddy's Drop are a seven-piece band from Wellington, New Zealand, formed in 1999, whose sound blends dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. They release music on their own label, The Drop, and built their reputation on the explosion of reggae and soul-infused dance music out of Wellington, taking that sound around the planet.
This October they bring their 21st anniversary tour for debut album Based on a True Story to Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Birmingham, London and Glasgow. The album was self-released in 2005 and became a milestone, spending 111 weeks in the New Zealand Top 40 and picking up eight New Zealand Music Awards plus a Gilles Peterson Worldwide Music Award. These shows mark the band's first UK dates since the death of founding member Chris 'MU' Faiumu, with the current lineup continuing to honour that legacy on stage.
Expect horns, dub basslines and plenty of room for the band to stretch out live. The Alexandra Palace date on 23 October comes with a guest DJ set from Nightmares on Wax, a longtime collaborator of the group.
