The Volks Nightclub
About The Volks Nightclub
Volks Nightclub sits right on Brighton's seafront at Madeira Drive, in a Colonnade building that's seen a few names over the years before taking its current one, after Magnus Volk, the inventor of the country's first electric railway, which once ran along the beach outside. Established in 1990, the Colonnade where the Volks is located was built approximately 100 years ago, and the venue's had a few names over the years including The Chain Pier Bar, before it was named after Magnus Volk. It's become one of the city's long-running spots for underground club nights, renowned for its focus on electronic music, including drum and bass and jungle, serving as a central hub for the city's underground dance scene.
The club runs across two rooms, with a basement room with separate bar and sound system which holds 60 people, and the main room on ground floor level, with overall capacity reported at around 300 to 350. Expect a programme built around bass-heavy sounds alongside garage, techno, electro, trance and hardstyle, plus hip-hop and hard house nights depending on the promoter.
Given its seafront location and compact, no-frills layout, it's a good choice if you want proper sound and a dancefloor-first atmosphere rather than anything flashy. Current listings include Aftershock's Amen4Tekno, Hard Hush, A.M.C's Grassroots Energy, Sabotage Thursdays and Elro & Vibe Chemistry, giving a decent sense of the drum & bass and hard dance crowd it pulls through the week.
